The Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) represents nearly 16,000 highly trained professionals in more than 100 countries who provide care in specialized units and work toward the best outcome possible for all critically ill and injured patients. Annual critical care medicine costs increased from $56.6 to $81.7 billion, representing 13.4% of hospital costs, 4.1% of national health expenditures, and 0.66% of gross domestic product. Cost savings up to $1 billion per quality-adjusted life year can be attained with critical care management of severe sepsis, acute respiratory failure, and general critical care interventions. Twenty-four–hour intensive staffing reduces ICU costs and length of stay. Up to $13 million in annual hospital cost savings can be realized when care is delivered by an intensives-directed multi professional team.

Optimal control of glucose levels aiming for near norm glycaemia prevents long‐term complications, but the constraining factor in achieving this is hypoglycaemia. As a result of the specialized care, patient survival rates improved dramatically, generating a call for additional units capable of caring for seriously ill patients with heart diseases. Once these cardiac care units were developed in the 1960s, the need for nursing specialists in intensive care increased significantly. Radiology is a medical specialty that utilizes imaging to diagnose and treat disease visually perceived within the body. Radiologists utilize a variety of imaging techniques such as X-ray radiography, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), nuclear medicine including positron emission tomography (PET), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to diagnose and/or treat diseases. Why Dubai, UAE?

Dubai is a city in the United Arab Emirates, located within the emirate. The emirate of Dubai is located on the southeast coast of the Persian Gulf and is one of the seven emirates that make up the country. It has the largest population in the UAE (2,106,177) and the second-largest land territory by area (4,114 km2) after Abu Dhabi. Is one of the few cities in the world that has undergone such a rapid transformation - from a humble beginning as a pearl-diving center - to one of the fastest growing cities on Earth

In 1993, the Nursing Professional Practice Group – Critical Care was initiated as informal Critical Care Interest Group (CCIG). Nurses working in different Intensive Care Units across the United Arab Emirates identified the needs to form a group that would The group was comprised of ten critical care nurses from clinical backgrounds. The main objectives at this time included sharing expertise and supporting each other. However, there were many difficulties at that time in establishing a formal group. With the help and support of the Federal Department of Nursing (FDON) and the commitment of all members, the Nursing Professional Practice Group – Critical Care was finally established in 1997 by Administrative Decree 27/97. A policy was issued from the Department of Nursing defining their purpose, criteria for forming a group, terms of reference, and the role of the Department of Nursing.
